Boston Red Sox: David Price struggles on Sunday Night Baseball
By Justin Keene
Boston Red Sox’s Starting Pitcher David Price continues to struggle against the Yankees, allowing 8 runs on 9 hits Sunday night.
In the rubber match of this weekend series, the Boston Red Sox were aiming to secure a series win heading into their three-game series in Washington. David Price and Luis Severino is the matchup you want to see for a Sunday Night Baseball game.
The Yankees won the first game of the series in convincing fashion, 8-1. Boston answered right back on Saturday, scoring 11 runs on 17 hits behind a strong outing by Chris Sale.
The Yankees’ bats came out swinging after getting shut down by Sale the night before. New York scored 4 runs in the first inning, all on home runs. Price would continue to struggle in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Rookie Catcher Kyle Higashioka crushed his first career MLB hit for a home run to left field. Two batters later, Aaron Hicks would take Price deep for the second time of the game; this time a solo shot and ultimately ended up knocking Price out of the game.
Price finished the night with 71 pitches, going 3.1 innings, giving up 8 runs on 9 hits with 3 strikeouts. Price has now allowed 130 earned runs in 238.2 innings in his career against the New York Yankees. His 5 home runs allowed now brings him to 32 against the Yankees in his career.
Boston bats shut down by Yankees’ pitchers
The Boston Red Sox offense was held to 4 hits all night. Severino and his wipeout slider shut down the Red Sox. The Boston bats got 2 hits off the Yankee ace. Andrew Benintendi hit a single to left center in the third inning. Benintendi would then steal second base and give the Red Sox 2 runners in scoring position. J.D. Martinez left both men on, as he struck out after a lengthy at-bat.
This was the extent of the pressure the Boston bats put on Severino, as they didn’t get another hit off him until the 6th inning.
The Red Sox bats were then silenced until the 9th inning. Sandy Leon got a pinch-hit double to deep left field. Then Blake Swihart would move the runner over on an infield single. Young third basemen Rafael Devers would then hit a ball to third base, scoring Leon but causing Swihart to get thrown out at second base. Devers’ RBI ended the shutout. Brock Holt would then ground out to the shortstop to end the game.
Importance of season – series against the Yankees
With the win, the Red Sox and Yankees are now tied atop the division yet again. The Yankees now lead the season series 5-4. These two teams won’t meet again until August for a 4-game series at Fenway Park.
The next 10 games between these two teams will be huge, as both teams are on pace to win over 100 games. One will win the division and one will be forced into the Wild Card game. Whoever wins the season series might end up winning the division based on head to head tiebreaker.
