New England Patriots: A bittersweet goodbye to Malcolm Mitchell
By Sam Minton
Malcolm Mitchell was released by the New England Patriots on Monday. Mitchell seemed to have some great potential, but the Patriots were forced to sever ties with the wideout due to injury issues.
Malcolm Mitchell’s time in New England can be summed up with a single question. What if? Mitchell showed some promise early on in his career, but with injuries mounting up, the New England Patriots were forced to release the young wideout.
The wideout has only played in one game since the Patriot’s Super Bowl victory two years ago. He has battled knee injuries since his days at Georgia. It looks like that is what led to his demise in New England.
Mitchell showed plenty of promise when he was on the field. He only played one full season where he had 32 catches for 401 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Mitchell was great playing on the outside. He could be relied upon to make important catches by the sideline to secure a New England first down.
Mitchell’s defining moment in New England
Mitchell will be remembered for his great play in Super Bowl LI. Mitchell had 6 catches for 70 yards and made some big plays.
It will be interesting to see what Mitchell does next. If his knee injury is as serious as it seems I can’t imagine a team picking him up this year.
Still, Mitchell has performed and it would be a shame if he has played his final game in the NFL.
Hopefully, that isn’t the case.
The Patriots definitely could have used Mitchell this season. The wide receiving situation is not good. The Patriots have little depth at the position.
This is a really sad departure. Mitchell was trying to get back but just couldn’t get healthy. He clearly has the talent, but his body let him down.
Hopefully, Mitchell will get another opportunity to play in the league. He is definitely well deserving of the chance.
