New England Revolution: Former 1st round pick Clint Dempsey hangs up the boots

Clint Dempsey started his professional soccer career with the New England Revolution. After 15 years the USA soccer legend has announced his retirement.
You may not remember that legendary American soccer player Clint Dempsey played with the New England Revolution, but it’s actually where he started off his professional career. Now after 15 years, Dempsey had decided to retire from the MLS and International soccer.
Dempsey may go down as the best goal scorer in the history of United States soccer. He has appeared in 141 international games and scored 57 goals.
He was the spark of United States soccer. He was a loudmouth who would never quit. Dempsey could turn the tide of a game with an amazing goal.

Dempsey has ties to New England. He was drafted by the Revolution in the first round (8th overall) of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. Dempsey had a great rookie season starting 23 matches and scored 7 goals and had an assist. Dempsey’s great season earned him the rookie of the year award.
He followed his rookie of the year season with 10 goals and 5 assists. He scored a game-winning goal in the Eastern Conference Finals, but the Revolution were unable to bring home the championship.
Dempsey’s final season came in 2006. He played in 21 goals and scored 8 goals and 2 assists. He missed a lot of the playoffs due to injury, and the Revolution once again lost in the finals.
After that Dempsey headed to the Premier League where he ended becoming the highest paid player to come over from the MLS.
Dempsey will probably be remembered for his work at the International level. He electrified the USA national team and has some iconic moments.
So congrats on a great career Clint. Even though your time in New England was short, we are grateful we got to witness the start of an amazing career.
