Boston Bruins: Charlie McAvoy a worthy investment
By Sam Minton
Charlie McAvoy is the future of the Boston Bruins. McAvoy is in the last year of his entry level contract and Boston would be wise to lock him up.
Charlie McAvoy is an amazing defenseman. He is just as good at scoring goals, as he is defending in his own zone. It looks like the Boston Bruins realize that they can’t let McAvoy get away.
McAvoy is in the last year of his entry level contract and contract talks have begun between the two sides. It looks like McAvoy could be getting a massive payday.
"“Of course, he’s one of those high, young players looking for a long-term extension,” Kypreos said during an intermission segment of Saturday’s Bruins-Canucks broadcast in Canada. “He’d love to avoid the bridge contract. I think it’s safe to say his representation will look towards the Aaron Ekblad contract extension with the Florida Panthers. That had an AAV of $7.5 [million]. With an aging [Zdeno] Chara, it’s certainly something for the Bruins to consider.”"
Now this may seem like a boatload of cash. If McAvoy got $7.5 million a year, he would be the highest paid skater on the Bruins roster.

This just shows how great a position the Bruins are in. They locked up Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, and David Pastrnak to deals that are well under market value. This is just a testament to the Bruins front office and not an indictment on any players.
Is McAvoy worth it?
Now some fans may not want to shell out all that money early on in a players career. Most players take a bridge contract before really getting paid.
But McAvoy is worth whatever he wants. The kid is amazing on the ice.
McAvoy is currently a top 5 scorer for the Bruins this year. In 7 games he has a goal and 5 assists.
But wait there’s more. McAvoy is also one of the Bruins best defenders in their own zone. Charlie can deliver a crucial blow and is quick on his feet.
Something that I have really appreciated seeing is McAvoy stepping up as a leader this season. McAvoy isn’t letting anyone touch his teammates and isn’t afraid to get in opponents faces.
With Zdeno Chara retiring soon, signing McAvoy to a long-term extension seems like the right move. The Bruins need to ensure that they have a solid defense for years to come. When the big man decides to call it quits, McAvoy will be the Bruins best defensemen.
So even though it may come at a steep price, the Boston Bruins need to re-sign Charlie McAvoy.
