The Boston Bruins have lost a lot of defenseman due to injury, and Steven Kampfer has fit in wonderfully so far.

The Boston Bruins have been bitten hard by the injury bug, especially in the defensive department. That means some guys who weren’t expected to have big roles would be launched into the spotlight. One guy who has done surprisingly well was Steven Kampfer.

It seemed like the New York Rangers basically begged the Bruins to take Kampfer in the Adam McQuaid trade. I for one was stunned when I saw him on the trade. Why would the Bruins take on another defensemen? I thought that was why they were getting rid of McQuaid.

Well once again I was shown why I would be a terrible NHL GM because Kampfer has been forced to play a lot early on this season.

More from Chowder and Champions

Kampfer has played in 5 games and has an assist and a rating of 0. Kampfer’s impact is felt more off the stat sheet.

The 30-year-old can deliver devastating hits and we saw this in the Bruins game against the Philadelphia Flyers. After delivering a big hit, Kampfer dropped the gloves and electrified his teammates.

Also Kampfer has helped some of the young guys adjust to the NHL game. With all of the injuries, the Bruins were forced to call up Jeremy Lauzon. Head coach Bruce Cassidy paired Lauzon with Kampfer in what I think was a very smart move.

By pairing Kampfer and Lauzon together you ensure that the rookie is comfortable on the ice. Having a veteran next to you can give a  sense of confidence and I think you saw that in Lauzon’s play.

Next. Charlie McAvoy out for awhile. dark

So even though I didn’t expect it, Steven Kampfer is doing some pretty good things for the Boston Bruins. When you have a guy like that as your 7th defenseman you are in a good spot.
