New England Patriots Rumors: Josh Rosen would thrive under Bill Belichick
The next successor to Tom Brady may be a quarterback drafted in 2018 as the New England Patriots are consistently linked to Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen.
The next successor at quarterback to Tom Brady could very well hinge on what the Arizona Cardinals do in the 2019 NFL Draft. As the Josh Rosen trade rumors intensity, the New England Patriots are consistently linked as a possible trade destination.
Now that both Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. have been dealt, the next big trade possibility to watch is that of Rosen.
With new Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury very intrigued with draft prospect Kyler Murray, the availability of Rosen via trade appears very real if indeed Arizona selects the Oklahoma product.

With the 32nd pick in the NFL Draft, the Patriots could certainly swap that pick for Rosen and finally have a viable successor to Brady. That price could be higher considering the number of teams who could be in on Rosen, including the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins.
In a new report by NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, a team like the Washington Redskins could make a push at Josh Rosen, but in his opinion, the New England Patriots are the ideal destination.
"“Not only would the Patriots land an heir apparent for Tom Brady, but they love a good deal and Rosen offers a tremendous value for a young quarterback in terms of the money attached to his contract (he has three years and $6.2 million remaining on his rookie deal). Plus, they have an ample amount of draft capital (12 total picks, tied for the most of any team,” Jeremiah noted. “In my opinion, Rosen is worth the Patriots’ first-round pick (32nd overall). I would trade it for him in a heartbeat. They would still have plenty of draft capital to move around the board, if they so desire, even if they swapped that selection.”"
Since the interest in Rosen was very real for the Patriots prior to the 2018 NFL Draft, the possibility is very real. There were rumors prior and during that draft that the Patriots would be willing to move up in the draft for Rosen, so acquiring a top 10 selected quarterback for the 32nd pick would be the type of deal Bill Belichick would further solidify his genius status with.
Add to that the fact that Rosen would come with a year of actual NFL experience and the New England Patriots should be able to further build up a quarterback with the talent and mental makeup to succeed Brady.
Why Rosen would thrive under Belichick
Both Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels would give Josh Rosen an opportunity to succeed in a similar way to what they did with Jimmy Garoppolo.
As a player who seemingly has a chip on his shoulder, playing behind a player like Tom Brady could both benefit him and further motivate Brady who would once again be looking over his shoulder at the next guy.
That’s where Belichick will get the most out of both quarterbacks. Rosen also has two key attributes the Patriots future Hall-of-Fame coach loves.
"“Bill Belichick covets intelligence and toughness in his players,” Jeremiah wrote. “I think those are Rosen’s top two qualities. He’d give the Pats cheap insurance in case something were to happen to Brady, as well as a long-term succession plan. Plus, I think Rosen would thrive in that offensive system. He’ll be challenged mentally given the way that they game plan so specifically for each week, and he’ll rise to that challenge.”"
That would also put three of the top 4 quarterbacks selected in the 2018 NFL Draft in the AFC East. Along with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen leading the New England Patriots after the Tom Brady era would be intriguing considering his disdain for being the last of those quarterbacks selected.
A coach like Bill Belichick would certainly feed off that motivation, if indeed Belichick outlasts Tom Brady in New England.
If Kyler Murray lands in Arizona, this is a potential deal that could shape the future for the defending Super Bowl champions.
