It may be crazy, but the New England Patriots should highly consider signing veteran defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Now that the New England Patriots have some cap space to play with, perhaps it’s time to think about spending a little cash on one or two of the remaining notable free agents out there.

While all the emphasis has been on the offensive side of the ball, Bill Belichick could still shock the NFL and bring in one of the most dominant defensive players in the league over the last decade in one Ndamukong Suh.

Though no longer an All-Pro player, the 32-year-old defensive tackle is still a disruptive player who can still solidify a defensive line.  Last season with the Los Angeles Rams, Suh teamed up nicely with Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers to form a stout defensive line against the run and struck fear into opposing offensive lines.

The Rams eventually loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII, but it didn’t come because the defense didn’t show up.  Suh played well in that game as he did throughout 2018 combining for 59 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

As close as the Rams came to winning that game, Ndamukong Suh should be as hungry as ever to win and what better team to win a Super Bowl with than Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

Known throughout his career as a dirty player, fans may not embrace the idea of bringing in Suh, but what he brings on the field is what a defensive minded coach like Belichick will value if the team even considers the possibility.  At this stage in his career, he should come cheap as teams are unlikely to offer him the $14.5 million, he made last season with the Rams.

Given the big money he has raked in throughout his career, he may be willing to sign a team friendly deal for a shot at a ring and why not with the team he battled against in the AFC East when he suited up with the Miami Dolphins.

What Suh can still bring

On a short-term deal, Suh to the Patriots would be perfect for both sides.  Not only would he be teamed with Michael Bennett, younger edge rushers like Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise would have an opportunity to flourish with the attention both Suh and Bennett would demand.

Also, adding Ndamukong Suh would give the New England Patriots some serious depth along the defensive line.  Along with Bennett, Wise and Rivers, the team also have a very reliable veteran in Lawrence Guy, another young defensive line player in Adam Butler and newly signed veteran defensive tackle Mike Pennel.

So, as far as Suh being a dirty player, Belichick can certainly handle that persona.  In a New England Patriots uniform, the reputation may even make him a more effective player as the team will put him in positions that will utilize his dominant nature.
