Boston Red Sox rumors: Mookie Betts return highly unlikely
By Sam Minton
If you have been listening to Mookie Betts you would realize that it doesn’t look like he will be returning to the Boston Red Sox.
The season has been over for a long time for the Boston Red Sox. You could tell that a playoff run wasn’t in the cards for the team early on.
This was an important season for the Red Sox. Obviously as defending champions the team wanted to perform well, but also Mookie Betts was in a contract year.

Betts has been the face of the Red Sox these last few years. In 2018 he was the AL MVP and helped Boston win the World Series.
At the beginning of the season it seemed like a certainty that Betts would be coming back to Boston. Even though players like Bryce Harper and Mike Trout got massive deals it looked like Boston was ready to pay up.
It was also expected that Betts would want to stay in Boston. That might not be the case anymore.
As the season comes to a close the Red Sox’s have had some visitors attend games. David Ortiz made his first public appearance since getting shot in the Dominican Republic and Carl Yastrzemski was honored as his grandson Mike visited Fenway as a member of the San Francisco Giants.
Now seeing how much love these guys get after all these years might convince a guy like Betts to stay in Boston. Well, that definitely wasn’t the case.
"“It’s pretty cool that they have their career in one place, but you can be remembered in that same fashion even if you put on a couple different jerseys,” said Betts. “It definitely doesn’t hurt to only put on one jersey . . . [But the Yastrzemski celebration] doesn’t sway me [about the future] one way or the other.”"
Betts might as well have announced that he is leaving. That just sounds like a guy who is ready to get paid and I don’t think that will be in Boston.
The Red Sox sucked all their money into guys like Xander Bogaerts and made a questionable move by offering an extension to Chris Sale. After a disappointing season will they want to make a $350 million or more investment.
So make sure to watch the Sox’s final games this season. It might be the last time you see Mookie Betts wearing a Red Sox jersey.
