The Chicago Cubs have a new manager and Boston Red Sox fans will know his familiar face.

We have seen a lot of players become managers recently in MLB. A former Boston Red Sox has added his name to that list. David Ross is the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs had a tough 2019 season. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. With the talent they have that shouldn’t be happening.

Ross spent a total of 3 seasons in Boston. His most notable run came when he helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2013. His stats don’t exactly jump off the screen but that isn’t where Ross makes an impact.

Ross is a great locker room presence. He can rally players and get them motivated. I think he will be a great manager.

We have seen a surge of former players become managers. We have seen Aaron Boone, Gabe Kapler, and Dave Roberts all make the jump from the field to the dugout. Arguably the most successful has been Boston’s own Alex Cora.

Cora had a phenomenal start to his career. The Red Sox ended with a 108-54 record and were World Series champions. You can’t do better than that.

Even after a mediocre season this year Cora still boasts a career managerial record of 192-132. Having almost 200 wins in your first two seasons is insanely impressive.

It will be interesting to see how Ross does? The pressure will be on him to make the playoffs. He can’t waste the prime of Kris Bryant’s career.

So will Ross emulate Alex Cora and find success or will he be like Gabe Kapler and end up getting fired rather quickly? I guess Boston Red Sox fans will have to wait and see if Ross is the next best player turned manager.
