J.D. Martinez didn’t opt-out of his contract and that will have a major impact on the Boston Red Sox this offseason.

Well, decision day ended and J.D. Martinez made quite the choice. Martinez is staying with the Boston Red Sox at least for this season.

Now the power hitter can opt-out in 2020 but he is at least staying in Boston this season. The Red Sox will definitely be glad to have him back.

It was a surprise to see Martinez come back. Mostly because the Red Sox played so poorly in 2019.

A year after winning the World Series they failed to make the playoffs. They were barely above .500 and finished 3rd place in the AL East.

Unlike the team, Martinez had an impressive 2019. He had a batting average of .304 with 36 HR and 105 RBIs. For a 32 year old that is pretty impressive.

So in the grand scheme of things Red Sox fans should be ecstatic about this deal. Why wouldn’t you want Martinez back?

Well, this could have some major impact on the team. Now Mookie Betts might not be able to return to the team.

The Red Sox front office said before the season started that they were looking to slash payroll. Well now that Martinez is back on the roster how can you sign Betts?

It seems like Chaim Bloom has reached a fork in the road. Does he go against what the front office said and re-sign Betts or does he let the face of the franchise walk away before his first season even begins?

So Bloom will most likely anger and alienate one very important population that could get him fired. The question is who will it be?

The Boston Red Sox are very happy to have J.D. Martinez back, but his commitment to the team has made things a bit more difficult.
