New England Patriots: Re-signing Matthew Slater is smart move
By Sam Minton
The New England Patriots re-signed Matthew Slater on Friday night which adds some consistency to the locker room in a time of uncertainty.
To be honest I didn’t expect to hear a lot of New England Patriots news in the coming days. I think we can all agree sports have been put on pause.
But Patriots fans will be happy to hear that there is some good news to report. New England has re-signed Matthew Slater, ensuring that he plays the entirety off his career with the team. On Friday night he signed a two-year deal that averages $2.6 million a year.

It’s likely that Slater could have gotten more money if he left New England (like most players). He is without a doubt the best special teamer in the NFL.
You have to appreciate the loyalty that Slater has to the Patriots. He chose winning over earning more money. Hopefully, that will rub off on another New England free agent.
The main takeaway from this deal is that the Patriots locker room won’t be as different next season. With the caliber of players that could be leaving New England that is a great sign.
Slater has been a leader on and off the field for years. That is arguably where he makes his biggest impact. He is a seasoned veteran who has won multiple championships.
Having him in your locker room is important, especially if Tom Brady ends up leaving. He will be able to keep everybody on track and rally the troops.
On the field, Slater is a beast on special teams. His punt coverage can not be topped. It’s not a surprise that Bill Belichick likes him so much.
In the end, the deal is deserved. Just like Tom Brady, Matthew Slater deserves to spend his entire career with the New England Patriots.
