The New England Patriots may consider this gem in the later rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The NFL draft isn’t an exact science. Maybe more of an art, really. Years ago, teams like the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry were known for finding gems in unlikely places. Modern data analytics have made uncovering completely unknown gems much less likely. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be drafted in a later round or not at all and still work out for the New England Patriots.

Good examples right here in New England abound including undrafted players like Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler, current burgeoning star cornerback  J.C. Jackson and terrific center David Andrews all of whom were undrafted, and, of course, there was a certain 6th round quarterback who did quite well for New England for a few years.

More from Chowder and Champions

So who might be that type of player the New England Patriots might target in one of their 6th or 7th round picks this year? Staying in type, let’s go with a potential wide receiver. New England has a paucity of wide receivers and could certainly use a long-armed, tall catcher with upside.

A 6th or 7th round big wideout with pizzazz

Marques Colston was a big wide receiver from a small school, along the lines of Randy Moss size-wise. While he didn’t have the speed of the other-worldly Moss, he did run a 4.54 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine at 6’4″ plus and 224 pounds. Not too shabby.

Who might be that type of sleeper in the 2020 NFL draft waiting late in the draft for New England to snatch him and give him an opportunity?

Let’s go with Binjimen Victor a wide receiver from Ohio State who fits the profile somewhat of what we may be looking for. He’s 6’4″ tall and 198 pounds. Check. Long arms. Check. Ran a 4.60 forty yard dash with a vertical leap of 35″. Check. Not bad at all.

Victor had an adequate career at Ohio State. Last season he caught 34 with 6 TDs and 545 yards. Pretty good for a low round prospect.

But here’s the upside. First, Victor has a big frame with long arms, i.e. a large catching radius to catch balls that are not perfectly placed. Second, he’s got decent and maybe deceptive speed. And, third, he’s played on a super team in a great conference and will be no stranger to big games. So the stage in New England won’t likely be too big for him.

dark. Next. Bill Belichick resurrects players’ careers

Victor is the type of wide receiver worth taking a flyer on in the later rounds for New England.
