Jon Lester’s contract with the Chicago Cubs is about to expire and this seems like a perfect opportunity for him to end his career with the Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox should have never let Jon Lester leave. He is a pitcher who deserved to stay with the team. Now they have a chance to make things right.

Contract negotiations with Lester sputtered out of control in the 2014 offseason. The Red Sox simply didn’t want to pay Lester.

More from Chowder and Champions

Lester was great in Boston. Who can forget the no-hitter he tossed in 2008. Throughout his career with the Red Sox, Lester went 110-63 with a 3.64 ERA and struck out over 1,300 batters.

Eventually, Lester would get his big deal when he signed with the Chicago Cubs. A 6-year deal worth $155 million to be exact.

Since leaving Boston, Lester has continued to pitch well. In Chicago, he has gone 71-41 with a 3.54 ERA and almost 900 strikeouts.

So with Lester’s contract expiring at the end of a season, the Red Sox should bring him back so he can end his career in Boston.

The starting rotation is in need of some help. Whenever the season starts up you will be relying heavily on Eduardo Rodriguez to be your ace with Chris Sale out for the season.

Entering 2021 the Red Sox will only have Rodriguez, Sale, And Nathan Eovaldi signed to deals. With a decimated minor league system thanks to Dave Dombrowski, they don’t have the talent to bring a starter up either.

This makes it the perfect opportunity to bring Lester back. He could be a perfect bottom of the rotation player. Having Lester on your rotation would make it that much stronger.

Also, Lester wants to come back to Boston. It seems like a win-win for both sides.

"“I’m open-minded to anything,” Lester said. “Absolutely it would be cool to go back and finish my career where it all started. But, I’ve got a little time before I really have to sit down and weigh that decision, even if it’s something where they want me back. Hopefully, I’m still a good enough caliber pitcher that the want of my services will still be out there for people. We’ll see.”"

As Lester mentioned it would be really cool to see him finish his career with the Red Sox. It seems like a storybook ending. Imagine him helping the team win a World Series before he decides to end his career? Lester would be able to ride off into the sunset.

Next. Time for Andrew Benintendi to shine. dark

So I hope to see Jon Lester in a Red Sox uniform before he retires. He shouldn’t have left the team in the first place.
