Boston Celtics reportedly want to offer a max contract to Jayson Tatum
By Max Bozicas
The Boston Celtics appear to be ready to lock up another one of their young stars to a long term deal. This time it is Jayson Tatum’s turn to get paid.
According to a report by Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Boston Celtics will “likely” offer a max contract to their budding superstar Jayson Tatum. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given how much Tatum has stepped up his game during the 2019-2020 NBA season.
While it is unknown at this point whether the season will continue or not, Tatum has done more than enough to warrant a serious pay raise.

Tatum emerged as the best player on the team, having averaged 23.6 points and 7.1 rebounds prior to the stoppage of play. He had plenty of stellar individual performances, including on a national stage against teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers.
Should the Celtics offer Tatum a max contract, it would absolutely be the right move. Tatum proved this season that he truly can be a superstar and an elite player in the NBA. He should be wearing Celtic green for years to come, and Boston fans should be happy that the organization appears to feel the same way.
If Tatum does get signed long term, the core of the Celtics will be strong for years to come. With Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and hopefully Tatum all under contract for multiple seasons in the future, the team has a strong chance to be a perennial contender in the Eastern Conference.
The only risk of giving Tatum a max contract is that he has not performed at an elite level for a prolonged stretch of time. However, he was looking the part night in and night out before the season was postponed. Ultimately, the potential is there for Tatum to become one of the top players in the league and the Celtics need to lock him up.
Tatum has been touted as the next to take the mantle of elite Boston athletes. With that responsibility comes a payday worthy of an NBA All-Star. If Tatum can play as well as he did this season, giving him a max contract will be well worth it.
