Patrice Bergeron released a statement via the Boston Bruins social media and he didn’t mince words. Bergeron showed why he is a leader on and off the ice.

In the world, there are some good and bad people. It is just how life works. When you see one of your favorite players from the Boston Bruins speak so boldly you appreciate it.

One of the first lessons my Dad taught me when he noticed my interests in sports is to differ the player from the person. “Not all great athletes are great people.” Athletes are human beings who make mistakes just like us.

Thankfully the reason I am writing is because of something on the other side of the spectrum. We are celebrating a player using his platform for change.

You would have to be living under a rock to not know what is going on in our country. The murder of George Floyd by a police officer while 3 others watched. Protests have occurred across the country and the entire globe.

We are also seeing athletes step up to the plate. Locally we have seen players like Jaylen Brown, Enes Kanter, Marcus Smart, and Vincent Poirier participate in protests. Also, the various sports teams locally have made statements about the tragic event and pointing out societal issues that exist today.

On Wednesday we saw a player go above and beyond. That player is Patrice Bergeron.

Like a lot of us, Bergeron has done a lot of self-reflection during this time. Hockey players like to go under the radar and be quiet, but now Bergeron realizes he can’t do that.

We all know that Bergeron is a leader on the ice. You can notice the games when he is not playing. The Bruins play like a completely different time without him.

Also, we have heard the countless stories from his teammates talking about how great he is. Brad Marchand loves him like he is a member of his own family.

But then you see what Bergeron said in his statement. He wants to do more. He doesn’t want to just be in the middle. He is being vocal and making his stance clear.

Also, Bergeron is putting his money where his mouth is. As the statement shows, Bergeron is making donations to the Boston branch of the NAACP and also the Centre Multiethnique de Quebec.

dark. Next. The Boston Bruins will win the Stanley Cup in 2020

Once again we see why Bergeron is one of the most beloved athletes in all of Boston. The world needs more Patrice Bergeron’s.
