New England Patriots newly-signed quarterback, Cam Newton can assume another role for the team: the Magnet to attract other good players to New England

The New England Patriots lost not only an all-time great quarterback when Tom Brady left town, but they also lost something else: a player magnet.

Cam Newton can now do the same for New England as he assumes the reigns of director of the team’s offensive fortunes in 2020 and hopefully beyond. Yes, beyond. Here’s hoping that Cam and the Patriots are a great match that continues even after this show-me season.

More from Chowder and Champions

Brady was the ultimate player magnet that attracted talent. They wanted to come to New England in the early years to win Super Bowls. In later years, they wanted that and also to play with the GOAT. The greatest of all time.

It’s a nice line to have on your resume both during and after your playing career. Very nice and with a little luck, it would be an avenue to broadcast or other favorable venues.

No. 12, the marvelous magnet is now in Tampa Bay continuing to attract. Note Gronk and don’t be surprised if others follow before the team-building sequence is over prior to the beginning of real games.

But the Patriots No. 1 is now Newton and he has the magnetism, the charisma, and the pizzaz to attract top talent to New England, as well. It certainly behooves New England to encourage him to do just that. Get some of his NFL brethren to come and join the party in Foxborough.

There is no doubt that Cam will lead the Patriots out-of-the tunnel this fall along with Julian Edleman when the Patriots play their first their game this season in Foxborough on September 13th against Miami. Maybe a few key players who’ve wanted to play with Cam will see opportunity knocking in New England and come and join in the fun.

Hopefully, the outcome will be different than the debacle against Miami in Foxborough last December. That fiasco effectively extinguished any real Patriots chance to advance in the playoffs by their summarily blowing a bye-week in an inexcusably devastating loss.

Miami has a Patriot’ former de facto (why didn’t Bill Belichick just give the man the title of Defensive Coordinator if he was doing the job?) defensive coordinator as their head coach, Brian Flores. “Flo” has a lot more to worry about this time around.

With Brady, you knew exactly what he was going to do – and you couldn’t stop it (at least most of the time) anyway. With Cam, Flo won’t have any idea what the heck he’s going to do, and probably won’t be able to stop him either. If you’re a fan of the RPO (here, guilty as charged), you’re in for a treat. We haven’t seen anything like this. Maybe ever.

With Cam, the run, or at least the threat of the run is endemic to his game, his offense, his brilliant ability. Even if he doesn’t run too often (hopefully), he’s a threat to bulldoze whoever is in his way on any play. Smaller defensive backs need not apply.

New England needs an infusion of tested offensive skill players. Hopefully, Newton will attract some offensive skill guys who can contribute some big plays to the New England Patriots offense as part of his contribution to the team.

dark. Next. Cam Newton puts the NFL on notice

It would be great if he did and there’s no doubt he can certainly be that magnet. Add a really good wideout and a solid big back and we’re good to go. Hopefully, Cam will go right out and get ’em. He’s a magnet. He can do it.
