Could Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots pull off a major heist and lure Jadeveon Clowney to the team on a one-year deal?

If you think the prospects of Bill Belichick paired with a healthy Cam Newton is scary, imagine if the New England Patriots added a very motivated Jadeveon Clowney to an already solid defense?

Well, that possibility could be a realistic dream for Patriots fans and an absolute nightmare for the rest of the NFL.

While, it’s hard to believe a high-profile free agent like Clowney is still looking for a team, it would be no surprise if Belichick benefitted from the fact that the edge rush freak is still out there and available, which has CLNS’ Evan Lazar adding some hype to a rumor that wasn’t realistic just a week ago.

"“Before you tell me to stop dreaming, hear me out.  According to some reports, Clowney is looking for a top-of-market deal worth close to $18 million,” Lazer wrote, via Clutch Sports.  “But he is still unsigned and is starting to give off Cam Newton vibes as someone that might need a “prove it” year to reset his value.”"

With the $6.55 million in cap space the team now has following settlements with both Antonio Brown and Aaron Hernandez, there is some monopoly money to play with.  Who better to capitalize on a hungry player like Jadeveon Clowney than Bill Belichick?

Clowney, who is coming off a down year statistically with the Seattle Seahawks, has the versatility to fit perfectly in Belichick’s scheme.  Not only is he solid against the run, he is capable of creating absolute chaos off the edge.  He would be perhaps the most talented, athletic defensive player Belichick has coached since the days of Lawrence Taylor.

What makes this idea or dream even more enticing is what the Patriots already have on defense.  With what is considered one of the best, if not the best defensive secondaries in the league, adding Jadeveon Clowney to the front seven would be a major upgrade over Kyle Van Noy or any player for that matter that the team had coming off the edge.

The only downside of this possible acquisition (if there is one) is that it could push back playing time younger players like Chase Winovich and rookies Anfernee Simmons and Josh Uche would benefit from.  But, for just one year, those players would learn a great deal playing behind a freak of nature like Jadeveon Clowney.

Furthermore, Bill Belichick would love to have a player he labeled a “big problem” actually wearing a New England Patriots uniform.

"“Great player, very hard to block,” Belichick said following a Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans back in 2018, via Chron.com.  “He’s a force on every down.  It seems he’s like (J.J.) Watt, more dangerous on important downs, third down, short yardage, goal line, two minute – things like that.  He’s a big problem.  It’s a tough matchup for anybody trying to block him.”"

Clowney has had some pretty big games against the Patriots, so it would be fitting if he pulled a Darrelle Revis and gave Belichick an affordable year that possibly helps bring another Super Bowl to New England.

Wouldn’t it be fate if Jadeveon Clowney fell in the lap of the New England Patriots and he ends up strip sacking Tom Brady in a Super Bowl matchup for the ages?  Okay, now we may be really dreaming…or are we?
