Patriots Gameday: Cam Newton wants RESPECT on his game
It’s not about the money for New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, it’s about putting some respect on his name.
One team’s trash is another team’s treasure. But, when that treasure never stopped shining, the team recognizing that treasure still has value achieves the biggest reward. That may be just the metaphor to describe the union between the New England Patriots and one Cam Newton.
To the average NFL fan, Newton has the respect as a dangerous football player, but due to injury and the rise of young quarterbacks around the league like Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes II and Deshaun Watson, Newton has pretty much gone forgotten.
At just 31 years of age, the 2015 NFL MVP didn’t even have a home following his release from the Carolina Panthers until Bill Belichick and the Patriots reached out to take a chance on the talent known as Cam Newton.
On a one-year deal considered to be a bargain throughout the league, Newton is showing all those teams that passed over him that he still has a lot of football left in him. After two strong games as the Patriots quarterback, he is also showing he is a very dangerous quarterback.
Earlier in the week, Newton took to social media to let the world know money is not his main objective. It’s really about adding some respect back to his name in recognition of his game.

"“It’s not a lot of things MONEY cannot buy, BUT amongst the top of that list of things, you would find RESPECT as one of those!!” Newton wrote on Instagram. “THIS IS NOT ABOUT MONEY FOR ME; it’s about RESPECT.”"
In earning just a base salary of $550,000 in 2020, Cam Newton is showing Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots that he may be work keeping around for years to come.
Could he become the Tom Brady successor for a while?
Well, in throwing for nearly 400 yards against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, Cam has shown in two games that he could actually be more dangerous than Brady.

NFL fans and opposing teams know what he can do with his feet, but if the accuracy is there as it was Sunday Night, the league now has to watch out for a dual threat quarterback with experience and something to prove coached by Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels. It definitely keeps the New England Patriots relevant if not a Super Bowl threat if the team can get one more explosive playmaker in that offense.
Cam Newton and his next deal
If Cam Newton continues to play like he is, he will get a big contract this offseason whether from the New England Patriots or some other team.
As there could be more to the one-year deal Newton signed with the Patriots, it is possible that the team is feeling him out for something bigger. Perhaps, there is an extension in the works that could make him a $25 million/year player as outlined by former Patriots executive Mike Lombardi, who summed up what an extension could look like.
"“I think you would have to do a contract that protects the club from injury and also gives him the flexibility to get the guarantees that he wants,” Lombardi said during an appearance on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria on Friday. “I think there’s ways to do that. You can injury-guarantee it. … There’s no doubt he’s a [$25 million guy].”"
That would still put him behind a guy like Jared Goff who is making $33 million, but if Cam Newton is all about earning respect, taking that sort of deal to stay with the New England Patriots will have a greater impact on his career if he becomes a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and thus keep the dynasty alive for perhaps another decade.
Will the Patriots be willing to make that sort of investment? Time will tell. They certainly have the cap space to make it happen. If he has another big game against the Las Vegas Raiders, that contract extension talk will gain some steam.
