After the Boston Celtics demise in the Eastern Conference Finals, some think that Marcus Smart needs to be traded.

The Boston Celtics didn’t deserve to make it to the NBA Finals. They were outplayed and now fans are left wondering what the team needs to do next.

The takes range anywhere from simply letting the players mature, to blowing up the entire roster. As you can see fans are being very rational.

Another option that has been brought up is trading Marcus Smart. This lands in the middle of the above scale but the Celtics still shouldn’t do this.

Smart is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. When Gordon Hayward went down in the postseason, Smart stepped up in a major way.

In the playoffs, Smart averaged 14.5 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. This includes five games scoring 20 points or more.

The problem is that Smart seemed to let this get to his head too much. He chucked up too many three’s and took opportunities away from players like Jaylen Brown.

At the end of the day, Smart needs to know his role. If he is going to succeed in Boston it will be as a sixth man. If he wants to be a starter it’s time for him to leave.

Now Smart seems like a reasonable person. He should be able to understand this. If Boston sits him down and calls him out for his shot selection we should see an improved player next season.

The offense needs to go through Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker. If they are struggling see What Brown can do, but Smart should not be taking shots away from these guys.

Smart is still a valuable part of Boston’s second unit. When he is on his game he allows for Walker and Brown to get some extra rest.

The Celtics are a better team with Smart on it. He just needs to play his game and not take opportunities away from the main goal scorers.
