New England Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is stepping into the spotlight with confidence.

Could an undrafted free agent actually be the answer at wide receiver the New England Patriots have been waiting for?

Going into Sunday’s AFC East battle with the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots will be without a couple of their front-line soldiers.  With both Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry ruled out for the Week 8 matchup, second-year wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is suddenly the most experienced wide receiver who will be on the field as targets for Cam Newton.

Can the N.C. State product emerge as a reliable pass catcher vs. the Bills?

More from Chowder and Champions

As one of the bright spots in the team’s embarrassing 33-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Jakobi Myers is looking to build off his 4-catch, 60-yard performance.  In showing flashes of a receiver who can contribute in the NFL during his rookie season, Meyers has remained ready for this this opportunity as he has had to do throughout every level of his football career.

"“Every level of my career has been the same story,” Meyers said this week, via MassLive.com.  “I never start out on top, I wasn’t a five-star.  I didn’t go to high school as a football player, it was just a lot of adversity I had to work through and it taught me a lot of things on the way up.  I was always pretty confident, I knew what I could do, I knew I just had to be patient and wait on my opportunity, because if I sat there and got down about it or cried about it I wouldn’t be ready when that chance came.”"

After barely making the 53-man roster this season, Jakobi Meyers has kept his head up and just remained confident in his ability as an NFL wide receiver.  Now, with both Edelman and Harry out, it is Meyers who the Patriots offense is depending on to make some plays in the passing game, which is why he is a player to watch.

With the Bills geared in on stopping Cam Newton and the Patriots rushing attack, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels may just switch things up a little and get the passing game going.  Along with Demiere Byrd, Gunner Olszewski and perhaps undrafted rookie Isaiah Zuber, Jakobi Meyers will certainty get an opportunity to make an impact and it won’t be any surprise if he does against the Bills.

Why?  Because of his confidence.

Jakobi Meyers is a player built on confidence

Making the team as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2019, Jakobi Meyers is one of those stories who define the Patriot Way.

With 26 catches for 359 yards in his rookie season, Meyers has shown he can make some tough catches and has impressed with his route running at times.  In a way, he is a reminder of what the team could’ve had in Malcolm Mitchell.  With more opportunity, perhaps he can be an integral part of the offense going forward.

Of course, that will have to start in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills.  Heading into the AFC East battle, the confidence of Jakobi Meyers may just be the X-factor of the game.

"“I was already a pretty confident guy, confidence wasn’t something I was lacking, I just want to keep proving myself,” Meyers continued.  “So, I’m just going to keep going into every game with the same confidence I already know I have, it’s more about gaining trust with me.  I don’t need too many people to believe in. me and know that when they put me out there and they put their name behind me I’m something they can stand on proudly.”"
