Boston Red Sox: Why team shouldn’t have re-hired Alex Cora
By Sam Minton
The Boston Red Sox brought back Alex Cora on Friday, but the team should have gone in a different direction.
Well, the Boston Red Sox finally have their man(ager). Per usual the team dumped the news on a Friday when people will be quick to forget about it if the 2020 Presidential Election is called. After a season-long suspension, Alex Cora is back in Boston.
Now on the surface level, there isn’t a lot to complain about. The last time that the Red Sox were successful Cora was leading the team.

The former player is also known for creating a great locker room atmosphere and getting players to do their best on the field. Cora is the definition of a player’s coach.
But when you dive deeper into the move, some problems arise. Just the fact that the team dumped the news in the morning shows that they were expecting some blowback.
Now even though Cora, didn’t do his most serious cheating in Boston he will always be labeled a cheater for his time with the Astros. Now that stink is on the Red Sox.
Now it’s unlikely that we see teams throwing at Boston, but the conversation surrounding the Red Sox will continue to involve their misbehavior in prior seasons.
There’s also the fact that the Red Sox are headed in a new direction. They had an opportunity to start fresh. Sam Fuld seemed to be a perfect option for the team. He has worked with Chaim Bloom before and would allow the President of Baseball Operations to show that he is in control.
But ownership wanted the easy way out. They wanted to make fans happy and bring back one of their favorite managers in recent history. Ownership thinks it will make fans forget about how disappointing 2020 was.
They might be right but bringing back Cora might not be the best move for the future of the Boston Red Sox. When they need to head in a new direction and prepare for the future, they decided to just play the hits once again.
