Despite injuries to key playmakers, Cam Newton feels the New England Patriots offense are “extremely close” to putting it all together.

The New England Patriots are 2-5 and quite frankly a lot of things just aren’t going right in 2020, primarily the Cam Newton experience at quarterback.

While a lack of playmakers, injuries and COVID-19 has attributed to the team’s overall slow start, Newton as well as the entire team is not wallowing in excuses.  They know they still need to execute on the field.  That is particularly true for the offense that has been anemic at times this season.  But there is hope.

In last Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots’ offense starting to really drive the ball in the second half of the game and was only a Newton fumble away from pulling out a victory.  It was actually the best the offense looked in a really long time.

Appearing on The Greg Hill Show last Monday, Cam Newton believes his offense is close to putting it all together despite no Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry and tight ends who have been either non-existent or injured.

"“I felt like, for me personally, one play can make you feel like the man or make you feel as low (as) the lowest man” Newton said, as transcribed by WEEI.  “You know what I’m saying? And for me, going back and looking at the film, it was a great week of preparation, I admit that, and then it just came down to just ball security.  But all in all, as an offense, I think we’re extremely close.  If we just keep stacking bricks on top of bricks on top of bricks, then hopefully we can put a full 60 minutes together this weekend.”"

In taking on a miserable New York Jets team on Monday night, the New England Patriots as a whole will have an opportunity to get some things right against a team that may have already checked out.

On offense, they have to continue to run the ball behind Damien Harris and build on the chemistry formulating between Cam Newton and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who emerged as the go-to receiver in the game against Buffalo.

They also have to get something out of the tight end position.  That will be difficult due to the injury situation.  Rookie Devin Asiasi has been placed on IR and both Dalton Keene and Ryan Izzo are nursing injuries.  But, in doing basically nothing at the NFL Trade Deadline, this is the offense Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels are sticking with.

So, it is really on Cam Newton to get things going consistently.  Prior to testing positive for COVID-19, it appeared he was on his way to having the best season he has had since 2015.  However, that setback seems to have the veteran quarterback on reset, which leaves the question: Is it too late for Newton and the Patriots to turn the season around?

It all starts on Monday.  The offense has to build off the progress they made against the Buffalo Bills.  It all starts with confidence, believing in each other and establishing a winning attitude.

"“Listen, I just want to win,” Newton continued.  “That’s it.  Nothing else matters.  October wasn’t good to me and we have to make sure November doesn’t feel like October.  Monday night is good, but we have to win.  I’ll put it like this: I don’t want to lose the focus of what’s the reality, but we just have to make the proper adjustments day-by-day that is going to put us in the best situation to win come Monday.”"
