With the Boston Celtics having their Sunday matchup against the Miami Heat postponed, the NBA has now opened up a can of worms.

The NBA is quickly realizing that having a season outside of a bubble can create a lot of problems. The events surrounding the Boston Celtics on Sunday only proved that.

It seemed as though Boston was going to have to pull a Philadelphia 76ers type effort. It looked like they were about to play with only eight players on Sunday. Boston would be without key players such as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Brown and Tatum have been leading the way for the Celtics. They are both averaging more than 25 points a game. Boston has two of the best young stars in the NBA today.

With the 76ers being forced to play it seemed as though the Celtics would have to do the same, but then the game was suddenly postponed after it was revealed that the Heat didn’t have enough players to play on Sunday.

This is just the second game to be canceled this season, but it seems as though this could just be the beginning. We could see a lot more postponements in the upcoming days.

Across the NBA COVID-19 cases are rising. Soon enough, Adam Silver will have to consider putting the season on pause.

The problem with the cancellation on Sunday is that it sets a precedent. No longer can the NBA force teams to play. One can only imagine that the Sixers aren’t exactly thrilled after seeing what happened on Sunday.

There’s also the fact that the Celtics have a game right around the corner. Boston plays the Bulls on Tuesday. If they couldn’t field a team on Sunday, it’s hard to think that they will be able to on Tuesday.

If cases continue to travel throughout the league as they are, this season could be in jeopardy. The NBA might also have to think about returning to a bubble format. It seems to be the only way for the NBA to operate.

So with the postponement of the Celtics game on Sunday, the NBA will be put in a tough spot. It’s fair to say that a lot more games will be canceled. Hopefully, Celtics fans will be able to see them play again rather soon.

The NBA and their COVID-19 problems didn’t disappear with the new year. 2022 seems like the first year where NBA fans can expect some sort of normalcy.
