New England Patriots: Deshaun Watson would shine in the AFC East
The New England Patriots next franchise quarterback could be a young quarterback who has already established himself in the NFL, but it probably won’t be Deshaun Watson.
Sorry Patriots fans, but let’s not set ourselves up for major disappointment this offseason.
With all that drama going down in Texas with Watson apparently fed up with the Houston Texans would suggest a perfect fit in New England, an organization that is certainly the opposite of what’s going on in Houston.
This latest tweet by NFL Insider Adam Schefter just adds fuel to the drama:
As easy as it is to get excited about Watson playing quarterback for Bill Belichick and the Patriots, there are other quarterback-hungry teams who will be monitoring the situation. Teams who have more assets to offer in a potential deal than the Patriots would have.
With former Patriots front offense executive Nick Caserio taking over player personnel decisions with the Texans, one would conclude Belichick would have the upper hand, but is the head coach in position to offer up numerous draft picks for just one player?

That is where the current state of the New England Patriots will put them at a disadvantage with teams like the San Francisco 49ers and two other AFC East teams, the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, already linked to Watson.
Deshaun Watson is destined to join an AFC East team, but not the New England Patriots
Both Miami and San Francisco would be ideal situations for Watson given the offensive talent that would surround him, but the Jets could offer the best package if they are indeed willing to move on from Sam Darnold.
The Patriots could offer the No. 15 overall pick and future first rounders, but it may take throwing in 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in Stephon Gilmore along with Jarrett Stidham for Caserio to even entertain the idea.
Patriots fans would do that deal in a heartbeat, but realistically Belichick would not be able to outbid the Dolphins where head coach Brian Flores also has a relationship with Caserio.
Taking the Jets and Patriots out of the equation, lets imagine Watson in Miami. With their defense, the Dolphins would certainly challenge the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East title in 2021 given the New England Patriots don’t go on a major spending spree.
No shade to Bills quarterback Josh Allen, but that immediately would make Watson the best quarterback in the division, which could be his status for years to come.
In all, it is not good news for the Patriots as far as potentially acquiring Watson or the prospect of him playing under center for another AFC East rival that finished above them in the standings. It will be a wild offseason no doubt. If Watson does not end up in New England, whichever team he ends up will certainly impact the team and their search for a quarterback.
