Boston Red Sox: Setting expectations for 3 offseason acquisitions
By Max Bozicas
The Boston Red Sox haven’t exactly set the world on fire this offseason, but to say that they have been completely silent would be disingenuous. The Red Sox have made a few moves that didn’t garner much national attention, but could benefit them for 2021 and beyond.
The most notable names the Sox added so far are Enrique Hernández, Garrett Richards and Adam Ottavino.
All three of them have had success in the past and are still worthy of seeing significant action on a Major League Baseball roster. However, none of them are surefire signings that are expected to shine with no red flags.
The question is just how productive can they all be, and will it be enough for the Red Sox to be competitive?

Boston Red Sox second baseman Enrique Hernández
Enrique Hernández, known better by his nickname “Kiké” is primarily a second baseman but also has experience playing every position in the infield and outfield.
Hernández has spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and was a part of their World Series winning team in 2020. The Boston Red Sox signed Hernández to a two-year, $14 million deal.
Hernández has a career line of .243/.313/.425 with an OPS of .738. Hernández has shown that he has some pop in his bat, but ultimately he’s not striking fear in the heart of whoever is on the mound.
Hernández won’t blow anyone away with his range, but he is a steady defender who won’t make many mistakes. Considering the Red Sox had generally below average defense at second base last year, Hernández projects to be an upgrade in that area.
Hernández is likely going to be the full time second baseman for the Red Sox in 2021, although you can expect to see him play a few other positions throughout the year as well. He should be hitting at or near the end of the lineup but is capable of providing decent production at the plate.
