The New England Patriots quest for a quarterback (hopefully) will take them to either a top NFL QB now (unlikely) or to a top draft pick (possible).

After 2020, the Patriots may have to take a different direction in 2021, But it in no way was due to a “failed Cam Newton experiment.” Don’t buy that balderdash. The so-called “Cam Newton experiment” was not a failure for Newton or the Patriots. Not at all.

More from Chowder and Champions

The ancillary personnel decision-making was the failure, not Newton. The Patriots personnel operation did basically nothing to provide Newton with anything close to a competitive supporting cast. He had Julian Edelman and nothing else. When Edelman was hurt, he had basically nothing in the wide receiver and tight end positions.

Game over.

Newton, with any cast of complementing players whatsoever, might just have made the playoffs. Even with just Edelman on hand. To put the blame on Newton is ludicrous.

The responsibility is on the Patriots poor personnel management structure. Nowhere else. So can this group make the right decision on the next quarterback of the New England Patriots to at least make them competitive, e.g. playoff-worthy or are they not capable?

New England Patriots 2021 NFL Draft is key

If the Patriots do not make an NFL-shattering trade of multiple first-round picks, players, etc. to secure one of the two top quarterbacks to replace the Super Bowl-winning quarterback they foolishly kicked to the curb, what should they do, and are they capable of doing it?

Without Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson, this team has two options. They can go for broke and trade a plethora of assets (like 3 first-round picks they would likely squander anyway and maybe even other players) to try to select the next great Patriots quarterback of the future.

Or, they can re-sign Newton and draft a top quarterback in the first round to be his understudy for a year or two.

Either makes sense for this franchise that has lost its way since off-loading its captain-general for a lousy third-round compensatory pick. The questions are these: First, is this personnel operation capable of selecting the best quarterback available if they do trade that boatload of picks to get into the top five (forget about Trevor Lawrence, not happening).

Second, if they do re-sign Newton, can they actually make a pick at 15, or, if they trade some picks to move up can they actually have the perspicacity to select the quarterback who will at least get them to a playoff level in the next five years?

These are valid questions. The option preferred here is to give up the picks and the players to obtain Watson if he is on the market.  Whatever it takes. This team does not seem to have the backbone to take that type of step.

But, do they at least have the acumen to at least draft a top quarterback, even if it costs them additional draft choices and players? That is a quarterback who can actually make this team competitive again? It will take a personnel operation with foresight, backbone, and shrewdness to make any of these scenarios work. Is the current New England Patriots personnel hierarchy capable of this? We’ll see.
