Celtics rumors: Why team shouldn’t trade for Aaron Gordon
By Sam Minton
The Boston Celtics seem to be preparing to make a move ahead of the trade deadline. They have come out as the top dog in the race for Aaron Gordon, but that deal would be a mistake.
Now there is no doubting that Gordon is a talented player. Right now he is averaging 14 points and 6.8 rebounds a game.

Gordon has some amazing athleticism as proven in the slam dunk contest, but he has also been improving his shooting ability. In today’s NBA he’s a quality player.
So why wouldn’t the Bruins want him? That’s where things get complicated. A deal to get Gordon would cost way too much.
Why Celtics shouldn’t trade for Aaron Gordon
According to The Athletic Boston is prepared to offer up two first-round draft picks on the table. That isn’t too high of an asking price but for Gordon, it doesn’t really seem worth it.
Then there is the fact that Marcus Smart seems to be involved in trade discussions for Gordon. That should basically be a nonstarter for Boston.
Again, Gordon is a good player who would help the C’s. Imagining a lineup of Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Gordon, and Tristan Thompson would have fans rather excited.
Smart just means too much to this team. He is the heart and soul of the Celtics roster. Imagining him anywhere besides Boston just doesn’t make sense. He is a crucial part of the C’s roster now and in the future.
Smart has a knack for changing the course of games with his gritty play and his superb defense. Without him, Boston has struggled and has looked lifeless at times.
Now Smart shouldn’t completely be off the table. If they can acquire John Collins by trading Smart go right ahead. Collins can make Boston a champion.
Gordon will not get it done for the Celtics. At best he might improve the team by one or two wins. Gordon isn’t the missing piece that the Celtics have been looking for.
So the Celtics need to be smart when it comes to making a move. It might seem great to get some new pieces but that won’t be enough. They might even do more harm than good.
If Boston really needs to make a move they should focus on players that are as talented as Collins. Only then they should consider moving on from a player as important as Smart.
