By Sam Minton
With Tuukka Rask being injured and Jaroslav Halak testing positive for COVID-19, the Boston Bruins goaltending depth was severely tested, but Jeremy Swayman has strived in this stressful time.
Bruins fans were treated to Dan Vladar and the young goaltender did well in his own right, but Swayman is a different player. He has the ability to do something special.

So far Swayman has appeared in four games and boasts a 3-1 record. He has stopped 121 of the 130 shots that he has faced so far in his young NHL career.
His latest win was over the Sabres where got his first experience of an NHL shootout. He stonewalled Buffalo not allowing a single goal.
So it might seem like jumping the gun, but Jeremy Swayman has staked his claim on the Bruins NHL roster. If he isn’t backing up Rask for the rest of the 2021 season, he should definitley be next season.
Why Jeremy Swayman is here to stay with the Boston Bruins
As mentioned before, Swayman is a different type of goalie. Even though he is only 22 years old, “Sway” has some impressive poise between the pipes. Also even though he has only played four games, he has also made some highlight-reel saves.
Swayman also has the right mindset to be successful. He seems to be able to turn off any surrounding noise and focus on the task at hand.
These last few weeks have been filled with some highs but also some lows. Swayman’s coach at Maine, Red Gendron recently passed away. After his win on Tuesday, Swayman pointed to the sky remembering his former coach.
The Bruins had some decisions to make this offseason. Halak and Rask both need new deals. David Krejci also has his contract expiring at the end of the 2021 season. If Boston doesn’t bring any of these guys back they will have a lot of cap space to play with.
Now while moving on from Rask is a bad idea, but after watching Swayman play, Boston doesn’t need Halak. Swayman is ready to be the full-time backup.
Halak is 35 years old and will be 36 at the start of next season. Boston shouldn’t waste money on an aging goaltender when they have a player like Swayman just begging to be played.
The Bruins need to trust their young players that they have selected. Swayman has shown that he has the skills to be successful in the NHL. In a few seasons, he could even be Boston’s starter.
So Jeremy Swayman is here to stay and that should make Boston Bruins fans very excited.
