The New England Patriots young quarterback drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, Mac Jones, is still making noise coast-to-coast.

Jones was at one time projected by some as the apple of the San Francisco 49ers eye after they traded up with Miami for the third overall choice in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

They subsequently passed on Jones and selected a potentially great alternative, Trey Lance of North Dakota State with that pick.

Many observers (this one included, yet doubted it would happen) thought Lance would be a great pick for New England as a multi-role, RPO-type quarterback. But it was not to be.

The 49ers made their pick, Lance. New England waited until Jones slid down the draft board and selected him with their own pick, the 15th pick in the first round.

Since that pick, some observers have concluded that Jones will be a star in the NFL (guilty here again), while others perhaps still, not so much.

Observations of New England Patriots Mac Jones from coast-to-coast

So observations of Jones continue to be varied as the pre-season and its various camps unfold. One recent article on the left coast (49ers’ coast) noted the following,

"Jones’ inability to immediately seize command of a starting gig doesn’t bode well for a Patriots team that figures to again struggle, offensively, this upcoming season…Sure, Jones’ rough start during offseason workouts isn’t automatically an indicator of what his pro career will be. Lance, too, could fall anywhere on the NFL spectrum from MVP-caliber superstar to a massive bust within a few years’ time. No one knows. But at least based on what we know now, the 49ers are seeing some additional justification for why they were correct to defy the national media by passing on Jones, going with Lance instead and banking on the latter’s significantly higher upside."

Well, that’s an opinion and may ultimately prove to be correct but … let’s take a look at what arguably the New England Patriots’ top beat writer, Tom Curran, had to say about Jones very recently.

Heres’ how one website cites Curran’s view of the situation,

"During a segment of the Rich Eisen Show, NFL insider Tom Curran talked about the impact Mac Jones has made at New England so far. And going by Curran’s comments, Jones certainly seems to have made quite an impression.“They (Patriots) are agog… Word is that they sense Jones is further along than any rookie quarterback they’ve had pass through the system, period. Since 2000,” said Curran."

That “agog” means according to Merriam Webster.

I guess Tom Curran is reporting that the Patriots seem to like their young quarterback. Don’t be shocked, folks. It’s been explored in more detail previously.

He may be shorter than expected, or lighter than expected, or not so fast as expected (which is probably bunk), but, it may be quite likely that he will be better than expected, by far.

So, observers on the left coast can speculate all they like, but I’ll take Tom Curran;’s word for it. If the Patriots say he’s the best they’ve seen from a rookie in two decades, it says a lot.

It says an awful lot.

From this vantage point, whether Mac Jones starts this season or not matters not at all. The Patriots have a perfectly good veteran quarterback available in Cam Newton, (better than most observers fathom), the negative comments notwithstanding.

Yet, at some point in the future, the likelihood of Mac Jones starting and setting the NFL on fire is there and very real. If you are a Patriots hater be afraid. Be very afraid.

The Patriots are on their way back and they are aiming for Lombardi Trophies, again. And guess what, they are quite likely to get them. And, you can take that, to the bank.
