Boston Red Sox: This is just the beginning of the Andrew Benintendi heroics
Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder Andrew Benintendi played the role of hero in the 12th inning of Tuesday night’s 4-3 victory over the Phillies.
On Monday night, it was veteran Dustin Pedroia who sent the Boston Red Sox into the night victorious. And on Tuesday night, it was the rookie phenom who delivered the game-winning hit in another long, grueling night at Fenway Park.
In a game that lasted over four hours, Andrew Benintendi stepped up to the plate with runners on first and third in the bottom of the 12th and did something he will probably do many times in his career.
He lined a game-winning single into the right-field stands to give the Red Sox the 4-3 victory and their second-consecutive walkoff when over the Philadelphia Phillies.
"“We’ve played some long games on consecutive days,” Benintendi said, via the Boston Herald. “I was just trying not to overt think it and just hit the ball.”"
Benintendi on defense
The 22-year-old rookie didn’t see do it with the bat. His defense also helped win the game for the Red Sox. Benintendi threw out Howie Kendrick at the plate with one out in the eighth inning to help keep the score tied at 3-3.

With the same composure he had at the plate in the 12th to record his first career walk-off hit, Benintendi played the ball just right. His ability to remain calm in that particular situation is something that impressed teammate Jackie Bradly Jr.

"“I saw where the runner was and I saw how he had it gauged up. There was no sense in him panicking,” Bradley Jr. said following the game, via WEEI. “He played the ball the way he was supposed to, but just got a hard kick. As he was running to get the ball I saw him pick his head up and kind of analyze where he was. That’s why he knew the distance that he was wasn’t very far and he able to throw a strike to home plate.”"
Those two plays summed up the kind of player Boston Red Sox fans will get to watch hopefully for many, many years. The way he keeps calm at such a young age is the perfect recipe for a player poised to have a flare for the heroics.
Impressively, Andrew Beninendi has bounced back from the biggest slump of his young big league career to come through for the Red Sox. If that is not a sign of a big time player, I don’t know what is.
