During Super Bowl media week, Tom Brady revealed the 4 things that make New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick smile, but here are 4 ways to really make him smile.

Tom Brady has made Bill Belichick smile many times throughout their tenure with the New England Patriots.  Don’t let the Seth Wickersham article fool you, the success of these two men on the football field will outlast any amount of tension they may have off the field.

Although everyone outside of the New England region rarely see Belichick smile, the usually, purposely stoic head coach does have a sense of humor.  He also does have a joy for the simple things in life.  This week, when Brady was asked to reveal the 4 things that make his coach smile, he pretty much pointed out the obvious.

Yes, talk about Navy, the sport of lacrosse, some good Bon Jovi music and memories of Lawrence Taylor gets the coach going.  But, as Patriots fans who have grown to know Belichick’s style over the years, we really know what makes him smile.

So let’s start with the obvious.

Do your job

There is a reason why players like Brandon Bolden stick around on this team.  For the same reason a player like Rob Ninkovich could excel in the Patriots system, Bill Belichick puts players in position to be successful.  With a team first approach, when players simply do their job good things happen.

From Tom Brady to the 53rd player on the roster, situational football has been the thriving reason this man is leading his team to an eighth Super Bowl appearance.  When players do what they are supposed to do, Belichick will gush about them for hours.

If you don’t believe me, see what he has to say about punter Ryan Allen.

No days off

According to former NFL linebacker and Patriots hater Bart Scott, it is not fun to play in New England.  Of course, for every Tedy Bruschi there is going to be an Adalius Thomas.

In fact, the former Patriots linebacker would’ve been moaning and groaning when Belichick made his team practice a couple weeks ago during a snow storm.  It just showed that when he chanted “no days off” during the Super Bowl victory parade a year ago, he really meant it.

Preparation, commitment and thinking ahead is what makes this well-oiled engine go.  We’ve seen it with Bill Belichick and the coaching staff in documentaries like “A Football Life,” and we are currently seeing it in Tom Brady’s docu-series “Tom vs. Time.”  When you study the game and make the sort of commitment players have made, Belichick will smile wider than Michael Strahan.

Don’t give the media anything

Okay, Rob Gronkowski kinda, sorta gets away with saying some things in the media.  But, who wouldn’t let a talent like Gronkowski get away with telling the media a little too much.

Let’s face is, Bill Belichick and his players are a reporter’s nightmare.  Not only do they not give away too much information, they all have a robotic approach to giving answers.  It could be a reason why the coach and the team are the most hated team outside of New England, but they do their talking on the field.

What fan doesn’t appreciate that?

Winning Super Bowls

Bill Belichick will give a beaming smile when his team wins a Super Bowl.  For the reasons mentioned above, he really congratulates his players when they put in the hard work, commit themselves to the team and do their job on the greatest stage in professional sports.

Fedora and all, the New England Patriots coach has been relaxed this year.  Perhaps he has confidence that his players are extremely focused and ready to play the game of their lives.  Perhaps he knows offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are prepared to call the best games of their lives in their final games as members of the organization.

Perhaps…Bill Belichick is at the point in his long, successful career where he is simply enjoying the moment.  Perhaps, he has remembered to smile

Winning does that to anyone.
