New England Patriots: Danny Etling taking advantage of Tom Brady’s absence
By Sam Minton
With Tom Brady absent at OTA’s, New England Patriots 7th round pick Danny Etling has gotten some extra snaps and some help from an unlikely source.
New England Patriots rookie Quarterback Danny Etling probably didn’t expect to get as many reps as he has so far in OTA’s. When you’re sitting behind Tom Brady you expect to just be watching greatness, but with Brady being a no-show, Etling has gotten extra opportunities.
Etling would usually be running with the scout team, but with Brady out, he has gotten some reps with some of the starters and mostly backups.
Etling is getting rave reviews from the beat reporters. ESPN’s Mike Reiss was surprised by Etling’s arm strength, and NESN’s Doug Kyed noted that Etling is performing better than most expected.

A watchful eye
Also Etling is getting some special attention from a special member of the Patriots staff. After Etling seemed hesitant to make a throw, “pink stripes” himself Ernie Adams struck up a conversation with the rookie Quarterback and QB coach Jerry Schuplinski. Adams seems to be more of a watchful eye high in the sky. He rarely comes down on to the field so it was interesting to see him talk to Etling.
Etling’s accuracy is impeccable. In his senior season at LSU he completed 60% of his passes and only had 2 interceptions. It appears that the rookie has the basic mechanics. He has worked in multiple offenses and knows how to be a leader.

With some time learning under Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels, and Tom Brady, Etling could become a serviceable Quarterback, but for now, he will be spending most of his time on the sidelines.
