Boston Bruins come up empty at NHL awards
By Sam Minton
Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy and center Patrice Bergeron were up for awards on Tuesday night, but came home emptyhanded.
Ah, the NHL Awards. Where celebrities like Cuba Gooding Jr, Daughtry, and a ventriloquist come together to honor the NHL’s greatest players. Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was up for the Jack Adams Award, and Patrice Bergeron once again had the opportunity to take home the Selke Award.
Let’s start with Bergeron. The Selke Award is handed out to the best defensive forward. Bergeron has basically been a shoe-in to get nominated. This was Bergeron’s 7th straight season being nominated for the award. If Bergeron won the Selke Award last night it would’ve been his 5th in his 14-year career. When Bergeron retires they will probably name the award after him. I expect him to be back up for the award next season.
Bergeron just plays the game the right way. He is a 200′ player, who is dominant in the faceoff circle. When he sadly calls it quits, his number 37 will be hanging from the rafters.
Sadly he ended up losing to Anze Kopitar.

Now Bruce Cassidy was nominated for the Jack Adams award for best head coach. Cassidy is very much deserving of the award. He led a young team that was looking to rebuild all the way to the top of the Eastern Conference in the regular season. Cassidy proved throughout the season that he wasn’t afraid to mess with the lines, and was amazing for the Bruins.
Still Gerard Gallant took home the award since he managed to take an expansion team all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Gallant deserved to win it, he basically did what was considered impossible. In any other year, Cassidy would’ve won the award. Still it is impressive to see Cassidy in his 2nd year already being recognized for his coaching ability. The Bruins definitely found their coach for the foreseeable future.
Honorable Mentions
Some other Boston Bruins also finished rather high in the awards voting.
Charlie McAvoy finished 5th in the Calder Trophy race. He received 24 second place votes, 28 third place votes, 27 fourth place votes, and 18 fifth place votes. Now do I think that McAvoy should have won the award? No, but how on Earth does Yanni Gourde get a first place vote and McAvoy gets none?
McAvoy had a great season. In 63 games he scored 7 goals and 25 assists. He deserved to be much closer to the top 3.
Finally, Don Sweeney came in 4th in the GM of the year race. Sweeney has built a great team in Boston. The Bruins have a great young core and managed to re-sign key players like Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak. Sweeney has done a great job and hopefully will make a splash this offseason.

The Boston Bruins may not be coming home with any hardware, but the results show that their roster is filled with great players.
