Boston Red Sox should target these New York Mets aces
By Justin Keene
The Boston Red Sox should look to add a top starter to their rotation come the trade deadline.
With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, all the contending teams will be looking to make a move or two in hopes to put them over the top and prepare for a deep October run. The Boston Red Sox have proven themselves as a contending team and should be in the market for a player or two come mid-July.
There have been a lot of rumors about the Boston Red Sox potentially adding a bat (Manny Machado) or a bullpen arm. But what about another arm in the starting rotation? Pitching is the key to postseason success, so why not help out the rotation by potentially adding Jacob DeGrom or Noah Syndergaard from the New York Mets.
The Mets will be selling
Currently, the Mets are 4th in the NL East and over 10 games back of third place. The Braves and Phillies have gotten off to hot starts and will look to keep it up throughout the break. Don’t forget about the Nationals, who on paper are the best team in the division and have made it to the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years and are built for the postseason.

The Mets are most likely going to be out of playoff contention by the time the trade deadline comes around and are probably going to be in rebuild mode. Trading DeGrom or Syndergaard can get the Mets a lot of young players that they can build around for years to come. Getting one of these aces would be huge for the Red Sox, as they add another Cy Young caliber arm to an already stacked rotation.
Imagine if you were an opposing team and had to face Chris Sale, DeGrom/ Syndergaard, David Price, and Rick Porcello. Not to mention the Sox also have Eduardo Rodriguez, Steven Wright, and Drew Pomeranz. The head of the rotation is stacked, and teams may even have to face the top guys a few times, depending on how Alex Cora wishes to play it out in a playoff series.
What would it cost the Red Sox?
In order to land one of the Mets’ aces, the Red Sox would have to give up a lot. DeGrom isn’t an unrestricted free agent until 2021, and Syndergaard until 2022. This is more than a rental, this is a move that can set up your team for success for years to come.
With that being said, each player isn’t going to be cheap. The Mets would probably want at least one or two players from the current MLB roster as well as a few prospects as well. With Dave Dombrowski dealing half the farm in the previous years, this may be harder for the Red Sox than other teams.
Boston would probably have to start the conversation with Rafael Devers, which leaves a hole at the hot corner. This void could be filled with top prospect Micheal Chavis, who is currently serving an 80 game suspension for PED’s.
With the suspension, other teams might not want him, but that could benefit the Sox. In addition to Devers, the Red Sox would also have to possibly add Jackie Bradley Jr and/or Blake Swihart. The Mets need catching more than they need help in the outfield, so Swihart might make a good fit in this deal.
Anything’s possible
If the Red Sox are serious about making a playoff run, they should not leave out the possibility of trading for one of the Mets aces. Yes, the Red Sox would have to offer a big package if they want to avoid moving Andrew Benintendi or Mookie Betts, but a move like this could set them up for a deep postseason run and success for years to come.

It will be interesting to see what Dombrowski decides to do come trade deadline time; if he wants to do anything. Given his track record, you can only expect the Boston Red Sox to be in contact with various teams. If the Mets make DeGrom or Syndergaard available, it is worth it to at least pick up the phone and give New York a call.
