With former first-round pick Tyler Seguin entering the final year of his deal with the Dallas Stars in 2018-19, it leaves room for speculation of the Boston Bruins being a potential suitor.

Tyler Seguin was once the face of the franchise for the Boston Bruins. He helped the Bruins to a Stanley Cup Championship in 2011, the franchise’s first since 1972.

Now come back to 2018, where Seguin is entering the final deal of his 6 year, $34.5 million contract, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this upcoming season.

One of the Bruins weaknesses this past year was secondary scoring. The Tampa Bay Lightning shut down the Patrice BergeronBrad MarchandDavid Pastrnak line in the playoffs, which in turn; led to a 4-1 series victory in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.

With the Bruins showing interest in free agents John Tavares and Ilya Kovalchuk this past offseason, they seemed to have identified their need and are looking for help.

Ultimately, Tavares signed a monster 7 year, $77 million contract with division rival Toronto Maple Leafs and Kovalchuck signed a 3 year, $18.75 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Bruins missed out on a player this year, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be in the mix next year, where they still might want to address one of their glaring issues.

Tyler Seguin fixes just that. Over his past 5 seasons with the Dallas Stars, he has scored a minimum of 25 goals and always has stayed above 70 points. This past season alone he scored a career-high 40 goals and tallied 38 assists, giving him 78 points. This was his second best NHL season, as his previous best was 37 goals, 47 assists, and 84 points in his first season with Dallas back in 2013-14.

The Boston Bruins traded him to the Dallas Stars on July 4, 2013. This was arguably one of the worst trades in Boston Bruins history, as it does rival the Joe Thornton trade.

Seguin was 19 at the time, and quite the head-case; at least according to Bruins GM at the time Peter Chiarelli and head coach Claude Julien.

This time around, it is a different story. Don Sweeney is now the team’s GM and Head Coach Bruce Cassidy is better with the younger players; something Julien was not.

The players Boston got back from Dallas all currently are not on the Bruins roster. Loui Eriksson and Joe Morrow have departed in free agency, Reilly Smith was traded for Jimmy Hayes, who ultimately got released by the team, and Matt Fraser left via waivers.

There is no doubt that Seguin can produce and be a top 15 player in the league. He has proven that over his time with Dallas these past few years.

Seguin is going to get a lot of money with his next contract. He has also matured since the Bruins had him last, something that led to his departure.

Obviously, if the Bruins were to bring Seguin back, they would have to clear some cap space. The front office would have to work things out with Seguin as well, as they pretty much shipped him out of here the first chance they got.

Don’t leave out the possibility of trading for him mid-season if Dallas decides to make him available. Seguin could provide just the jolt this team needs heading into the playoffs.

However things shake out, it is definitely worth at least attempting to take a shot at the former Bruin, and bring him back to where his career started.
