Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy gave an update on injured defensemen Torey Krug on Tuesday. It appears Krug may be back on the TD Garden ice soon.

The Boston Bruins defense has performed rather well to start the season. Boston isn’t giving up 3 or 4 goals a game like last year. Now it looks like the Bruins will soon have one of their top defenseman back on the ice.

Bruce Cassidy gave an update on Torey Krug and it was promising to say the least.

"“Torey is progressing well,” Cassidy said in a press conference Tuesday. “May skate this week, so if he gets on the ice at some point this week, that’s always a step in the right direction.”"

It will be interesting to see where Krug slides into the lineup. The Bruins defenders have performed rather well. You obviously are getting some good production from Zdeno Chara and Charlie McAvoy, but some other players have stepped up in Krug’s absence.

More from Chowder and Champions

Matt Grzelcyk may have struggled early on, but in the last couple of games, he has looked really well. He has looked great on the power play and is holding his own in the Bruins zone.

The only guy who has really struggled at all is John Moore. The Bruins signed him to a 5 year deal in the offseason and were expecting a lot from him. He’s just been mediocre as of late.

When Krug comes back he will obviously slide in next to Brandon Carlo, and I think you need Kevan Miller on the ice for his presence alone. Without Miller the Bruins don’t have a true enforcer.

A tough decision

So that leaves Bruce Cassidy with a difficult decision. Benching Matt Grzelcyk would be a mistake since he is a promising young defensemen and benching John Moore would anger fans since the Bruins committed to him. You don’t get a 5-year deal and watch most games from the 9th floor.

The best approach seems to be rotating Grzelcyk and Moore. These guys are both solid defensemen and deserve playing time. Having one of them just waste away on the bench would be terrible. They need to stay in a rhythm in case someone gets injured.

We saw injuries tear this team apart last season. It’s a minor miracle that Torey Krug is the only player injured right now. At one point this season we will probably see another defenseman go down for an extended period of time.

So even though John Moore an Matt Grzelcyk both deserve to be starting, they will be forced to take turns playing. The Bruins remind me of the Boston Celtics in a way. The Celtics have a much deeper team overall, but the Bruins depth at defenseman and goaltender is nothing to scoff at.

Next. David Pastrnak worth every penny. dark

Hopefully Torey Krug will be scoring goals soon and making an impact for an already impressive Boston Bruins squad.
