Boston Bruins Gameday live: Team will be shorthanded for awhile
By Sam Minton
The Boston Bruins have been bitten hard by the injury bug early on in the season. It looks like some players won’t be coming back as soon as fans have hoped.
The injury bug loves being in Boston. Season after season we see the Boston Bruins get ravaged by injuries. This year has been no different.
The Bruins have been losing players left and right as of late. The Bruins have now lost 4 defensemen to injuries so far this season (I’m counting Torey Krug even though it was in the preseason). It looks like these guys won’t be coming back anytime soon either.
Today Bruce Cassidy gave an update on the Bruins injured players and it wasn’t pleasing. David Backes and Charlie McAvoy are both out with upper body injuries, and Kevan Miller is in a cast and will be out for at least 3 weeks.

Obviously, it sucks that Kevan Miller is out. He is an enforcer and is a presence on the ice. Maybe if Miller is on the ice, the Ottawa Senators wouldn’t have taken cheap shots at Matt Grzelcyk and Urho Vaakanainen.
No offense to Miller, but I am more concerned about Charlie McAvoy. Seeing him lumped in with David Backes isn’t hopeful. It looks like Boston’s favorite defenseman might have a concussion.
McAvoy is a fundamental part of the Bruins. He is a quality defenseman who can lay the lumber and clear the crease, and he is an offensive threat. Even though the Boston Bruins 1st line is dominating, opposing teams can now focus in on them and not have to worry about the Bruins defenseman.
Also, Urho is out after taking a devastating elbow to the head and I’m no doctor, but it seems like a concussion. The Bruins are now extremely thin at d-man and have been forced to give some young guys a chance.
Next man up
Jeremy Lauzon has been called up and will slide into the Bruins 3rd defensive pairing and be skating alongside Steven Kampfer. I like this move by Cassidy because Lauzon is next to a veteran defenseman. Also even though Kamper has no points, he has looked impressive on the ice. He is looking great in the offensive zone and is holding his own in the Bruins zone.
So far this year Lauzon has a goal and 3 assists down with the Providence Bruins. I’m not expecting Lauzon to be the next Charlie McAvoy, but I hope he can hold his own on the ice.
The main goal for Lauzon should be playing a clean game and not looking out of place like Vaakanainen did in his debut.
Jaroslav Halak is in net tonight and hopefully, he will continue the string of great goaltending that was started by Tuukka Rask on Tuesday night.
Puck drop is at 7:00 PM EST. Go Bruins!
