The New England Patriots are known for being an offensive powerhouse, but lately they have been amazing on defense.

If defense wins championships the New England Patriots are going to win the Super Bowl. New England’s defense has been dominating so far this season.

When you have Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski on offense it is hard to forget about playing defense, but the Patriots haven’t been scoring like they used to. So this season the defense has had to pick up the slack.

Even though New England has had some games where they have given up boatloads of points, they have been shutting down teams for a majority of the season. The Patriots defense hasn’t allowed a 300-yard passer since Week 7 and they haven’t allowed a 100-yard rusher since Week 4.

This means a lot for this season and the future of the New England Patriots. Obviously, when you have this good of a defense and are at the top of the AFC you are favorites to win the Super Bowl.

Last season, New England’s defense failed them in the big game. It doesn’t look like that will be happening this season.

More importantly though, this means that the Patriots are set up for a life without Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Whenever these two guys decide to retire, New England’s defense will have to become the calling card of the team.

The Patriots offense will have a relatively severe drop-off.  If New England’s defense is able to play like they have been lately, the Patriots will still be able to win a good chunk of games.

Now, most of the credit goes to guys like Trey Flowers and Stephon Gilmore, but I think some of the credit has to go to the de facto defensive coordinator, Brian Flores. Flores seems to be bringing the best out of his guys and the stats prove so.

Hopefully Flores will stay in New England and not be snatched up by the bevy of teams who will need a new head coach by the end of the season.

If the New England Patriots defense keeps shutting teams down I don’t know if anyone can beat them.
