At Super Bowl Opening Night we found out that Rob Gronkowski may not be the only player to retire after Super Bowl LII. The New England Patriots may lose Devin McCourty as well.

What is going on? Super Bowl Opening Night is supposed to be a fun experience for fans and players alike. This year it has been far from that for New England Patriots fans.

We all know that Rob Gronkowski has been thinking about retirement. At some points in the season, Gronk looked older than Tom Brady.

Gronkowski has been thinking about retirement since last season. We have gotten numb to the thought of life without Gronk. Patriots fans know that Gronkowski’s career will be over very soon.

But where did this Devin McCourty retirement talk come from?

Deion Sanders told McCourty that he heard he may retire and Devin definitely didn’t do anything to refute that claim.

"“I don’t know for sure, man, but I do look at it if we can win this game, win it with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that would top that,” McCourty explained. “I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy this season, and enjoy these last couple days with these guys.”"

I can’t really blame McCourty. This would be an amazing way to end his career.

McCourty has also been a really successful player. He made the transition from cornerback to safety and was also a great special teams player at the beginning of his career. McCourty has played in 139 games and has 21 interceptions, 9 forced fumbles, and 717 tackles.

If McCourty was to retire he would be one interception shy of cracking the top 10 in New England Patriots history. Asante Samuel is just ahead of him. Samuel was a beast in New England so this just shows how great McCourty has been.

The New England Patriots would definitely miss Devin McCourty if he did retire. McCourty is the heart and soul of the defense on the field and in the locker room. New England has guys like Duron Harmon who can step in and replace him, but nobody can be the guy that McCourty was.
