Even though the New England Patriots haven’t re-signed Trey Flowers it seems like the defensive lineman wants to stay with the team.

The New England Patriots should have one priority this offseason, re-signing Trey Flowers.

Flowers is the anchor of the defense. He holds everything together with his pass rushing abilities. When other players are struggling, Flowers can pick up the slack and still give the team a chance to win.

Last season was another great one for Flowers. He led the team in sacks for the 2nd straight season. It’s clear that he is one of the top defensive linemen in the league.

So when it was announced that the Patriots weren’t franchise tagging Flowers it was quite alarming. This means that Flowers can hit the open market and may find a major payday somewhere else.

But maybe we don’t need to hit the panic button.

Flowers recently made an appearance at the Springfield Thunderbirds military appreciation night. The team is AHL affiliate for the Florida Panthers. Why is the Panthers affiliate in Boston? I have no clue, but Flowers did make an interesting statement.

"“This is No. 6. We want seven,” Flowers says."

Unless Trey Flowers is planning on heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers (which I wouldn’t recommend), he has to be talking about the New England Patriots.

If Flowers was franchise tagged the team would have had to pay him $17.1 million for the 2019 season. Now that he is on the open market he could probably fetch a similar amount from another team.

Still, maybe Flowers will be one of the guys who takes a hometown discount. Maybe the team can work out a long term deal that pays around $15 million?

In my opinion, the Patriots need to pay Flowers. I don’t care what the amount is. If they lose him the New England Patriots defense will have a Grand Canyon sized hole to fill.
