The New England Patriots haven’t been the most active team in free agency, but they have brought back Jason McCourty in a move that bolsters the secondary.

This hasn’t been a fun free agency for New England Patriots fans. We have seen some great players leave the team, but the Patriots made a smart move re-signing Jason McCourty.

The Patriots are going to need a strong secondary. With Trey Flowers now on the Detroit Lions I don’t know how great the pass rush will be.

More from Chowder and Champions

McCourty exceeded expectations in his first season. He became the Patriots 2nd best corner and was able to lock opposing wide receivers down. McCourty had 70 tackles, 10 passes defended, and an interception.

These numbers may not look amazing, but McCourty was the 6th best cornerback in the entire NFL by Pro Football Focus. I don’t even think that the New England Patriots were expecting to get that when they traded for him.

The most important play that McCourty made can’t even be described with numbers. When it mattered most McCourty came up clutch.

In the 3rd quarter of the Super Bowl the Los Angeles Rams had a chance to swing the momentum of the game. Brandin Cooks was wide open in the end zone but McCourty came out of nowhere to break up the play.

The great thing about McCourty is that he now knows what it takes to make it to the Super Bowl. This year was a great learning experience for him. Now he can be a veteran leader in the locker room. I expect McCourty to once again be one of the top corners on the team.

Also, a key factor of this deal is that it is for two years. That means that we don’t have to worry about Devin McCourty and Jason retiring next season.

dark. Next. Another Tom Brady successor you’ve never heard of

It may not seem like a big move, but I am glad to see Jason McCourty return to the New England Patriots.
