It looks like the Boston Bruins will be without Matt Grzelcyk for awhile due to a dirty hit by Oskar Sundqvist. If Sundqvist isn’t suspended it would be a travesty.

Game 2 was a disappointing game for a multitude of reasons for Boston Bruins fans. The team played horribly and now the series is tied up at 1 game apiece.

Going forward it looks like the Bruins will be without one of their best defensemen. Matt Grzelcyk got driven into the boards and it did not look pretty. He had to be helped back to the bench and wouldn’t return to the game.

More from Chowder and Champions

I’m no doctor, but I think it is safe to say that Grzelcyk probably suffered a head injury that could keep him out of the rest of the Stanley Cup Finals. That would be quite the blow for the Boston Bruins.

Grzelcyk has been great on the power play and was having a great postseason. He has racked up 3 goals and 4 assists so far.

Now it is up to the Department of Players Safety to decide what happens to Oskar Sundqvist. The hit definitely seems like it is worthy of a suspension. Sundqvist drove Grzelcyk’s head into the boards.

There was one player who was particularly upset about the hit. If it was up to David Backes, Sundqvist wouldn’t be playing.

"“I don’t think that’s a hit we want in our game,” Backes said. “It was from behind, elevated into his head into the glass. If that’s a two minute penalty, there’s going to be a shortage of defenseman I think in this series by the end of it, but that’s in somebody’s else’s hands. That’s something I think if I’m making that hit, I’m probably watching from the bleachers for a few. But we’ll see what happens with their player.”"

If Grzelcyk is out for the rest of the series I believe that it is worthy of a 5 game suspension. The fact that Grzelcyk was injured has to play a role in the suspension even if the NHL doesn’t want to admit it.

The Department of Player Safety needs to make sure that these hits are out of the game. Like David Backes said they don’t belong in the game.
