With the MLB season in jeopardy, the Boston Red Sox might get Alex Cora back sooner than they expected.

There could be a lot of consequences due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have no idea if baseball will even return in 2020, but something might actually help the Boston Red Sox.

With the MLB season in jeopardy, the league has been forced to make some decisions on what would happen if the 2020 MLB season was canceled.

More from Chowder and Champions

One of these decisions was in regard to service time and the league said that even if the season was shortned it would count as service time. This would mean that a player like Mookie Betts would become a free agent.

Also, it was revealed that former Astros manager A.J. Hinch wouldn’t have to serve a suspension.  The 2020 season that wasn’t would serve as his 1-year suspension. This is very important because Alex Cora could find himself in a similar position.

The Red Sox have yet to be punished for their latest sign stealing scandal. For some reason, MLB  and commissioner Rob Manfred don’t have the time to reach a conclusion on the investigation.

But it is likely that Cora would face a similar suspension to Hinch. If Cora was suspended for a year he would be able to immediately return to this position as manager of the Boston Red Sox.

This would help out the Red Sox a lot. Even when Alex Cora left the team, players voiced how much they loved playing for Cora. As a former player, Cora knows what it is like to be a player and can connect with his locker room.

Boston is in a transition period. The loss of Mookie Betts is something that changes a franchise. We will see new players like Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and Eduardo Rodriguez become the pillars of the organization.

Having an experienced manager like Cora would make that transition much smoother. He would be able to guide the team in the right direction.

No matter what occurred in 2018, the Boston Red Sox won a World Series. Cora has proven he knows how to lead a winning team.

So if the 2020 MLB season is canceled we could see Alex Cora in a Red Sox uniform once again.
