The New England Patriots need to improve their passing game and bringing in a former foe like Trey Burton could help the offense return to its former glory.

Once Rob Gronkowski retired you knew that the New England Patriots offense would have to go through some changes. 2019 showed that losing the best tight end in the NFL is in fact bad.

The Patriots passing game struggled mightily in 2019. Besides Julian Edelman and James White, Tom Brady had no weapons to throw to. The team’s offensive struggles were the main reason they couldn’t even make it past Wild Card weekend.

Now the offense is in a state of flux. There seems to be a lot of changes happening in New England. The main one being there will be a new quarterback under center.

Whoever is the QB for the New England Patriots will need some help. If New England wants to be successful they will need a capable tight end.

There are plenty of options for the Patriots. They can use the draft or they can snag a proven free agent. Especially with the possibility of a young quarterback under center, it might be a good idea to go sign a proven player.

The Chicago Bears might have done New England a favor. They released Trey Burton who would be an interesting acquisition if he found his way on the Patriots roster.

Patriots fans should remember Burton. He was apart of the Philadelphia Eagles team that defeated New England in the Super Bowl. Now Burton can help out the Patriots.

Since leaving Philly, Burton has become an improved pass catcher. In 2018 he had 54 catches for over 500 yards and 6 touchdowns. I think Burton could perform much better than the tight ends New England currently has.

Burton is coming off a down season where he only appeared in 8 games. New England might be able to acquire him for a cheap deal. Chicago also still owes Burton money which makes things easier for the Patriots.
