First Round, No. 29 overall: Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

First Round; Trade:  New England Patriots Trade the 23rd pick in the first round and the 204th pick in the 6th round to Tennessee for their 29th pick in the first round and the 93rd pick in the third round.

This presupposes that the New England Patriots are absolutely convinced that their prime wish list target, Jalen Hurts will be available at the 29th pick. If not, they take Hurts at No. 23.

More from Chowder and Champions

We proceed as though indications are that Hurts will be available,

The New England Patriots offense is decimated. Their best player has left. Their wide receivers are poor (Julian Edelman excepted), their tight ends are poor and their running backs, James White excepted are mediocre.

They need offensive firepower from the NFL draft. First, they need a quarterback. The choice is clear. It’s Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma.

I have been consistent in this choice. He’s the right guy for the New England Patriots at the right time.

Hurts is a next-generation NFL quarterback. He’s a dual-threat quarterback. He boasts an excellent completion rate in 2019, 69.7 percent  and he also carried the football for 1,298 yards.

NFL defenses have schemed for a New England Patriots offense led by a relatively immobile but highly accurate passer. Hurts is a clearly mobile quarterback who is a threat to run on any play and a very accurate passer. This is a problem for NFL defenses. A big problem.

Hurts is the foundation piece for a revolutionary new Patriots offense. Should this draft ever be accomplished, their offense will be one of the most exciting in the NFL. If not THE most exciting.
