New England Patriots 2020 draft is the team’s most important in recent history on may levels

After the New England Patriots unparalleled reign of success atop the AFC East, the AFC and the league, the very foundation of that success has left. Tom Brady has gone to warmer pastures in Tampa Bay and another major cog in that offensive machine has joined him.

For the Patriots football chief and head coach, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels their offensive coordinator, this is showtime. By his inaction and deference to Belichick, Robert Kraft has seemingly cast his lot with the coaches over the best quarterback of all time. If it came down to that choice, I think it was a poor decision.

More from Chowder and Champions

Bill Belichick should have deferred to the greatest ever in this case who is still performing at a very high level and had given his all to the team for two decades. This was a bad decision by the team and now they have to either make up the deficiencies (somehow) or fade into NFL inconsequentiality.

In this case, mediocrity, which is the highest level I feel they can reach with the team as currently constituted, is worse than total oblivion. Being totally devastated puts you in the sweepstakes for the perceived next great NFL quarterback, Trevor Lawrence. Mediocrity dooms you to further mediocrity. A vicious circle.

A final, final word on Thursday’s New England Patriots draft

Not to put any additional pressure on our favorite team, but everything rides on this draft, Bill! This is for all the marbles. The whole ball game The bragging rights. The victory lap. The big parade. The triumph. All of it.

Everything is at stake this weekend. The defining draft of your career. Possibly even, the defining event of your career. This is it.

Tom Brady. the ultimate safety blanket is not here anymore to bail us (yes, us, we’re no Tampa Bay fans!) out. It’s all on you.

The commentaries. The histories. The legacies. The legends. This is it. This is the defining draft and matter of factly, the defining moment when it’s all on the line. All of it.

Bill, you chose this situation and this final showdown over who it has been all along. The quarterback or the mastermind?

It’s a field that you chose to play on to see who emerges victorious. You or No. 12? That’s what this seems to be all about. The final showdown.

Otherwise, why kick the man to the curb? Why not let him finish his career in the blue, silver, white and red. Why not? Only you can answer that question.

I was once told by a (the most?) prominent Boston sports talk show host, that I “bleed blue, silver, red and white” (or close to that.). On the air. One of my proudest moments. It’s true. It’s the Patriots and no one else. Anyone who roots for orange and red and whatever colors the Tampa Bay (Pirates, is it?) wear, well … can move to Florida.

A Final Note: colleague Will Hyland locked on to a draft target, and I jumped feet first onto the bandwagon banging the drum for the Patriots to draft Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma.

Next. It’s time to feel bad for Julian Edelman. dark

If it does happen, pop the champagne corks folks we’ll be on our way to our next dynasty. This young man can pass, run, lead, and just flat out play.
