The New England Patriots are looking up at the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.

Delusionists in New England Patriots nation think that a playoff berth for New England is possible, if not likely in 2020. I’ll tell you this, it’s highly, highly unlikely. Buffalo is the better team and the better team usually wins.

And don’t count out Miami who humiliated the Patriots at home in their last game of the season costing them a bye week and a chance to host the AFC Championship Game. Miami has their number and Coach Brian Flores knows all their secrets.

More from Chowder and Champions

Regrettably and foolishly, the Patriots kicked the best quarterback of all time to the curb this offseason. In an action smacking of the highest degree of hubris and the greatest level of ignorance, the Patriots disrespected the greatest ever and settled on a no-name, no-history, essentially rookie quarterback to lead the team in 2020.

Usually, such actions would be typical of cellar-dwellers in the NFL who are seeking some type of release from the prison of being consigned to the bottom echelons of the division.

But now, the Patriots are employing that tactic to try to miraculously emerge once again as the champions of the AFC East and ride off into the sunset into the playoffs. With this team, not happening.

Patriots Pollyannas, I call them, think that all is well after disrespecting the greatest quarterback of all time, to whom they gave little appreciation, and replacing him with a nobody. I have to ask, are these people, these fans serious?

Let me remind these rah-rah rooters, that the most important position on an NFL playing field is QB. He is the determining factor in an NFL team’s success or failure. For 20 years New England has had the best. Now, what do they have????

I am always amused when those who have only experienced the great times of New England football thinking, as the song says, “Everything is beautiful …” They have not seen the downtimes.

While I have debunked the falsehood that the Patriots were always the dregs before Tom Brady, it is quite clear that they were never champions without him. That’s the fact, Jack. They weren’t.

Now, with Brady kicked to the curb, these short-time fans think all is well because the great coach will make it so. I have offered before, Bill Belichick will not throw a pass. He will not run a dive play. He will not rush the quarterback. He will not do anything on an NFL playing field. (officially, at least.)

The Patriots fate will reside largely on the shoulders of their quarterback. For twenty years, it has rested on the shoulders of the greatest ever. These Patriots officials kicked this man to the curb. Disrespecting him, minimizing him, and basically telling him to leave if he wouldn’t play by their rules.

dark. Next. Patriots: These 2019 and 2020 draft picks under the microscope

The New England Patriots have made their own bed. Now they must sleep in it. My view as a long-time Patriots’ fan is that the Patriots’ “Braintrust” will have a lot of sleepless nights during the 2020 season. But, who knows, as they say, that is why they play the games.
