Make no mistake about it New England Patriots fans, the most important aspect that newly signed quarterback Cam Newton brings to the table is … excitement.

That’s right. You can read all you want about his statistics, his running game, his having been an MVP and all that, and it’s all well and good. But there’ll be no analytics here. Just a fact, the No. 1 attribute Cam Newton brings to the New England Patriots is … EXCITEMENT!

Clearly, Cam’s signing which was hyped prior to the signing by some observers (including the inimitable Rodney Harrison) as a good move, is even better now that it’s done. To make one thing perfectly clear, this has been a boring offseason, and worse than that, it has been a debilitating offseason.

More from Chowder and Champions

That is, until now. The loss of Tom Brady and then Gronk to Tampa Bay of all places was a cannonade right through the thick walls of the brash New England fandom. It was devastating to the two-decade culture of excellence that was set, beginning in 2001.

It was carried through to 2019 (sort of) by Brady and whoever else he had with him. But make no mistake about it, Brady was Mr. Excitement.

And as I’ve written before, he left because of “offensive indifference” by the Patriots brass. Penalty assessed. You lost the best quarterback in NFL history..

Brady was treated poorly and he reacted as any of us would, he wanted out. And in his situation, unlike most people, he could just do it. Say goodbye. I say good for him. But it was bad for us.

One of our colleagues wrote seeing Brady in a Tampa Bay uniform was “nauseating”. Awesomely put. It was. Thoroughly. It was the end of an era of excellence and quite likely the end of the road for New England’s dominance over the National Football League.

And the followup by the Patriots, for the most part, was poor. It was blah, bland, yawn producing, uninteresting, and drab. In short, boring, boring, boring. Until now. The signing of Newton changed all that.

Cam brings the excitement folks, and he and the Patriots are once again the talks of the football town. “How sweet it is” as Jackie Gleason used to say. The Patriots are relevant, again. Didn’t take long.

Whether it be his flashy wardrobe, that he’s as big as a truck, and can smashmouth a linebacker to shreds. Or, just the fact that a former MVP is replacing another former MVP at quarterback, the most important position on the field, that’s excitement.

Cam’s signing has restored New England’s strut, our stride, our swagger. Yes, we’ve got our swagger back.

No one outside of New England wanted to see another great quarterback replace Brady. The void was a deep as a chasm and as wide as the Grand Canyon. Now it’s filled, folks.

So that’s the fact. The Patriots are revived, renewed, revitalized, rekindled, and ready to rock and roll. The dull is dissipated, dissolved, and displaced by Newton.

I want to see Cam wearing that No. 1 jersey. It fits. That’s what Patriots football is all about. No. 1.

We’ve gone from looking forward to a blah offense this season to being able to expect great excitement. We’ll get an RPO offense led by a bulldozing quarterback who if he carries the rock is a tough tackle, and he can throw it too.

It’s a great new look for the Patriots. Can’t wait to see how it looks on the field. Newton, No. 1. Welcome to Titletown, Cam! Let’s go get No. 7.
