New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton should strike fear in any AFC opponent in 2020

The NFL’s top football land, New England has undergone a dramatic change-for-the-better in the past week or so. New England Patriots Nation was battered, bashed and bruised by the departure of the greatest quarterback not only in New England but in league history.

Things looked bleak. That’s all changed now. We have Cam Newton as our quarterback.

More from Chowder and Champions

The signing of Newton has breathed new life into a New England offense that had its heart say goodbye and head south to Tampa Bay. But with the stroke of a pen, New England has re-entered the fray to win the AFC East, compete for the AFC title, and maybe win even more.

The Buffalo Bills can put a stop to printing their AFC East champions T-shirts. The Jets and Miami can wipe the stardust from their eyes thinking that they finally will gain the upper hand over New England.

They can all take a few steps back. The Patriots signed Newton. The Patriots are back.

Knowing that the AFC East teams are not completely devoid of intelligence, it has to be evident to them that the mere presence of The force that is Newton is a game-changer, both literally and figuratively.

For two decades they had to deal with a laser-sharp statue in the pocket. That didn’t work out very well for them. Now, they have to deal with a force who can beat you with his arm. Can beat you with his legs, and can beat you with the stealth RPO offense. In short, he’ll just beat you.

AFC teams in any division have to be acutely aware that the addition of Newton changes everything. Single-handedly, Cam transforms New England’s dull and likely ineffective offense into one that can now beat you in any number of ways, regardless of the lack of an abundance of talented players at every offensive skill position. They’ll have enough.

Cam’s multi-dimensional skills make everyone better. The threat to run over linebackers will force defenses to adjust to his running capabilities and keep linebackers in tight. His ability to pass on the run and from the RPO will force defensive backs to maintain coverage.

And the two great weapons he has (maybe three if Mohamed Sanu is hopefully healthy), Julian Edelman and James White will be increasingly effective as a result of Cam’s multi-dimensional abilities.

This again is a nightmare scenario for not only the AFC East but also both Baltimore and Kansas City, the presumed front-runners for the AFC Championship game. Now the Patriots can throw a multi-dimensional offense, at them.

And lest it goes unsaid, don’t underestimate New England’s defense. They took some losses but they are still a formidable group with the best secondary in the National Football League.

And watch out for the dynamic Michigan pass-rushing duo of Chase Winovich and Josh Uche. They’ll be coming at opposing quarterbacks from both ends of the line.

What began as a gut-wrenching offseason with the loss of New England’s all-time sports hero, has been transformed by a single signing. Newton changed all that last week. He is the great equalizer for New England.

An article said he’s brought back excitement to the team and the region. Indeed. But he’s also brought back the ability to win on offense. And he brought with him an RPO offense that can light up the AFC East and the NFL.

Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels will devise the plan to unleash this force, Newton. They’ll get to work in earnest on it in about three weeks. Cam is New England’s new quarterback. Can’t wait to see how his new offense looks.
