With the news that there will be no preseason, it is clear that Cam Newton will be the New England Patriots starter in 2020.

2020 just keeps getting weirder and New England Patriots fans are not left out of the fun.

Things were already weird when we saw Tom Brady leave the Patriots and head down to Tampa Bay with Rob Gronkowski. Looking back that seems normal now.

The 2020 NFL season will look much different than prior years. LIkely there will be no fans and even if there is they will be in reduced numbers.

But now there is something else that will make things different in 2020. There will be no preseason. Also, offseason roster sizes will be cut from 90-80.

Now, this might seem like no big deal. Anyways who really cares about preseason games? They are boring to watch.

But for the Patriots this will affect them a lot. The fact that there will be no preseason games forces their hand when it comes to the quarterback position. Cam Newton has to be the starter.

Newton is a former NFL MVP who helped lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl. They might not have one but let’s look at Newton’s competition.

Jarrett Stidham is an unproven quarterback who hasn’t even started a game in the NFL. The only actual game experience he has in the regular season is taking over for Tom Brady once he has put the game away.

Stidham’s only chance at getting the starting job was by outperforming Newton in the preseason. Now that there are no preseason games there is no chance for him to show the team what he is capable of.

The Patriots can’t risk starting Stidham over Newton and having the young QB fall flat on his face. The safe and smart bet is having Newton be your starter.

Newton is an experienced quarterback who knows what it takes to win in the NFL. The worst-case scenario with Newton as your starter is that you have a good quarterback. The best case you have one of the best QB’s in the NFL and a chance to make a run in the playoffs.

So now that there is no preseason, there is no chance that Newton isn’t your starter in Week 1
